Bullfighting banned in Catalonia

Catalonia’s politians voted in favour of banning bullfighting. This vote was the result of a petition signed by 180,000 people against bullfighting. The ban was passed by a 68-55 vote in Catalonia’s parliament last Wednesday 28th of July 2010.

Bullfighting supporters state that it this part of Catalonia’s cultural heritage while antibullfighting activists argue that is is cruel and against animal rights. However some people believe this is an attempt by Catalan nationalists to differentiate from by rest of Spain by banning one of the most important traditions in Spain.

However, this is not the first Spanish region to ban bullfighting as it was banned in the Canary Islands in 1991.

The ban will take place on January 2012 so until then you still have the change to see bullfighting in Barcelona.

Spanish Cup in Barcelona

On the 19th of May, Barcelona and more precisely in the Nou Camp (F.C.Barcelona Stadium) will hold the final game of the Spanish Cup (Copa del Rey) against Sevilla F.C. and Atlético de Madrid.

To encourage the game, Atlético de Madrid have developed an original advertising to encourage their fans to achieve the maximum possible support. This advertising promulgates that Atletico’s fans can help their team win if they dream harder than rival fans.

As in all Spanish Cup editions, special meeting points areas will be prepared around the Nou Camp in order to allow all supporters from each club to be together to enjoy an amazing day in a comfortable and friendly environment.

The kickoff time will be at 9:00 pm at Camp Nou and as it happens every season, different areas will be prepared for each team supporters will be broadcasted by Spanish television channel TVE1.

To get to the Stadium check metro map: Maria Cristina (L3) and Collblanc (L5).

Good luck to both teams and have a nice time.

League title celebration in Barcelona

Next Sunday night (16.05.2010), Barcelona city could be either a big celebration or great sadness. With just one game left, Spanish league (la liga) title still has to be decided.

Barcelona is top of the league by a single point, so a win will guarantee Barcelona the title.

Spanish Liga BBVA table
Games Goal difference Points
F.C. Barcelona 70 96
Real Madrid 67 95
Valencia C.F. 18 68
Sevilla C.F 15 60
Real Valladolid -21 36
Málaga C.F -6 36
Racing Santander -19 36
C.D Tenerife -33 36
Xerex C.D -28 33

Barcelona plays at home against Valladolid, while Madrid plays away from home at Málaga. Surprisingly enough while Barcelona and Madrid will fight to win the Spanish league, both Valladolid and Malaga are fighting to avoid relegation so all four teams will give everything. Both matches will kick off simultaneously at 7pm local time.

If Barcelona wins this last game of the season, it will be Barcelona 20th Spanish League title and of course there will be a huge celebration. Barça supporters usually celebrate at the top of Las Ramblas (Canaletes fountain) so if you happen to be in Barcelona next week and you would like to be surrounded by more than 100,000 Barcelona supporters you just have to go to Las Ramblas.

However, you have to be aware that in recent years there have been riots during Barcelona celebrations so you should be aware that celebrations may turn into violence late at night.

Tip: If you go celebrating, do no stay there for too late as late at night things may get violent, and if you see any sign of people going mad damaging kiosks, lamposts and bus stops, do not stay any longer and leave the area immediately as things may get nasty.

Be safe and avoid any possible problem!
